Another one bites the crust…

We’re sorry to let you know that we’ve had to made the decision to close the bakery. Our final day will be Saturday 29th July.

Although a very sad decision, it’s also quite simply a practical one. Ever since we reopened last November, we’ve been sailing into the perfect storm of constantly increasing costs and decreased revenue.

The cost of running the business has increased by 40% whilst our takings are down 30%. We’ve been plugging the gap for the past 7 months but unfortunately we just can’t continue to do that any longer.

As most of you will know, we had big and exciting plans to grow the bakery in a new space in Deptford Market Yard. As inflation increased, the cost of that project went through the roof and it was no longer financially viable.

Despite that, we still had plenty of fun ideas and hope that we could turn our smaller space up on the Carriage Way into a great home for the bakery.

We’re really proud of the food we make, and the care and time that goes into making it, but as the months have gone on and costs have continued to rise it’s become harder and harder to make ends meet.

We’ve done everything we can to try and balance the effects. We’ve cut our staff hours to a minimum, we went from 5 days a week to 4 days a week, and we’ve worked tirelessly to make sure we buying the ingredients we need at the best price, but none of it has had a big enough effect.

We’ve already been through what should have been the busiest months of the year and quite simply, they weren’t. The good days just don’t make up for the bad days any more.

We’re now approaching the quietest time of the year and before we get to the point of not being able to make our own decisions financially, we’ve decided to call it a day.

We’ve still got a month left and we’d love to go out on a high. There’ll be another time for the overly emotional farewell message but for now, thanks to everyone who has supported us and been part of our journey.
